MISSING N36M: Heads Of Some Govt Establishments Are Money-Swallowing Snakes – JAMB Registrar

Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, has expressed worries over reactions that trailed the missing N36 million from the board’s office in Makurdi, Benue State, reportedly swallowed by a mysterious snake.

Oloyede, who decried Nigerians for making jokes out of the missing N36 million, said that such events also happen in other government establishments but are not known to the public because the heads of such establishments “are also snakes.”

He said, “That is Nigerians for you, making jokes out of serious issue. I didn’t find it funny since the story broke out because I think as a nation with a future, rather than celebrating those achieving success, we are busy celebrating people who should be caned.
“You turned serious issue into a national or an international joke. There are many snakes in other establishments but because those overseeing them are also snakes, that is why they could not be able to identify those snakes.
“Rather than creating an impression that JAMB is extraordinarily bad, they should give us a lesson to check where we went wrong.”
The professor stated this in reaction to the recent claim by Philomena Chieshe, a sales clerk in JAMB office, Makurdi that her housemaid connived with another JAMB staff, Joan Asen, to “spiritually” turn into a huge snake and swallow N36 million from the vault in her office.

Chieshe made the revelation during a recent interrogation by a team of auditors, adding that Joan Asen and her accomplices told her that they were responsible for all the money missing in the office through the use of a mysterious snake that always sneaked into the office to swallow the money from the vault.
But when Oloyede appeared in a programme on African Independent Television titled ‘Focus’, on Tuesday, he expressed regret that Nigerians chose to turn the incident into a joke, an act he said amounts to celebration of mediocrity.
Speaking further on the matter, Oloyede explained that the incident happened before he was appointed JAMB boss.
“In the case of the snake swallowing money, I think what happened was something that happened towards the tail end of 2016.
“I came in later part of 2016 and my mandate was to correct things that were not properly done. But I had the fortune or misfortune of having those selling the scratch cards prior to my appointment to give account since we stopped the sale of the scratch cards.

“And in the course of our investigation, some nasty stories were being told, which, of course we didn’t buy and that was why we took the appropriate decision. To us in JAMB, it was an old story because it wasn’t a recent issue, it happened few months after I came on board.

“When they could not account for the money, I had to invite them and to tell us what happened to the money. There were more ridiculous stories than the snake swallowing money story. In fact, some of the stories that entered the media were even smaller than what I heard in the course of my investigation.
“We have 1,500 staff members; there are wonderful individuals among them, so I wouldn’t want to dent their images by mentioning those revelations that came up.
“We had a story of some invigilators, who went for invigilation and were given N1million to allow students indulge in examination malpractice, because their lives were in danger, they accepted the money and deposited in JAMB’s account, that are the people we should celebrate and not those saying spiritual snake swallowed their money.”

When asked if instructed her aide to slap somebody, Senator Olujimi said, “Could I have done that, is it possible, how can I ask anybody to slap? I didn’t even say a word all through because I stood at the back.

“It wasn’t my business, it was the business of the security man. Yes I was in the staff lift. But what says we cant go in staff lift? Middle East: Baghdad double suicide attack kills many

At least 35 people have been killed in a double suicide bombing in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, medical sources say, the second attack in three days.

More than 90 were injured in the attack in Tayaran Square, in the city centre.
Baghdad has repeatedly been the target of bombings and armed attacks since the Islamic State (IS) group overran large areas of the country in 2014.
However, the pace of attacks has slowed since Iraq's government declared it had retaken all the territory last month.
Monday's attack was carried out by two men wearing suicide vests packed with explosives, the interior ministry said.
The site of the attack is a busy square where large crowds of construction workers gather to find work every morning.
It has been targeted by militants in the past.
An AFP reporter said there were a large number of security personnel at the site.

A suicide bomb attack on a checkpoint in the north of the city on Saturday killed at least five people, police said.

Buhari meets Saraki, Dogara; to meet Benue leaders January 15, 2018Sani Tukur and Agency Report

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met, behind closed doors, with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
This information was posted on twitter account of the Presidency Nigeria; @NGRPresident on Sunday in Abuja.
The post read: “President Muhammadu Buhari meeting with Senate President and the speaker Yakubu Dogara.’’
The meeting was expected to deliberate on national issues including the recent killings reported in Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and Rivers.
President Buhari had condemned the reported killings in Benue and ordered the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act for prosecution.
The President had on January 2 expressed shock and outrage at reports of killings of innocent persons in Omoku, Rivers, and the traditional ruler of Numana, Kaduna State, Gambo Makama, and his wife.
The traditional ruler and his wife were killed in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the New Year, while 10 villagers were reported killed at Dangaji and Ungwan Gajere villages, both in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state on Friday night by suspected gunmen.

MEETS BENUE DELEGATION MONDAY
Meanwhile, Mr. Buhari will on Monday meet with a delegation comprising political, traditional and opinion leaders from Benue State to comprehensively address the security challenges facing the state.
A source in the presidency said the urgent meeting was inevitable because of the frequency and scale of violence in the state and the reactions that have trailed the incidents.
According to the source, the presidency has been embarrassed by the large scale loss of lives caused by such repeated violence against innocent people.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to speak with the press ahead of the meeting said the discussions will address the issue of herdsmen attacks adding “ it may go beyond their menace to include the issue of the arming, training and financing of militia groups by some state governments.”
When contacted on the development, Mr. Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said although he was aware of the expected parley with Benue leaders, he had not been briefed about the issues being brought to the table for discussions.
He said the government welcomes any initiative by any group that would provide lasting solutions to the country’s security problems.
Mr. Shehu said security entails collective participation of all and it was, in his view “better for all to come together to find solutions instead of anyone trading blames.”
