Senator Olujimi Speaks on ‘Slap’ Drama

The Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi, PDP, Ekiti South, Monday debunked reports that she ordered her security aide to slap a staff of the National Assembly.

The senator also denied being slapped by anybody.

There were reports that drama ensued at the new wing of the Senate complex in Abuja after a National Assembly official physically assaulted Senator Olujimi, just as it was reported that she directed her aide to “slap” the legislative official.

But speaking with Journalists on what happened, Senator Olujimi said, “I went for a public hearing and I understood that there was another meeting upstairs so I got into a lift, yes it was a staff lift and I thought that everyone should be able in it and my security stood in front of me.

“Some gentlemen and women came in and were abusing, asking why he will shield anybody, ‘get out this is our lift.’ One of them just pushed him and then they had altercation, I just came out and told them that it was wrong and that is what happened.”

When asked if instructed her aide to slap somebody, Senator Olujimi said, “Could I have done that, is it possible, how can I ask anybody to slap? The boy came, and they brought him and I told him he should go because he knew that he didn’t do well. You didn’t do well because you were the one that slapped him. I didn’t even say a word all through because I stood at the back.

“It wasn’t my business, it was the business of the security man. Yes I was in the staff lift. But what says we cant go in staff lift? When I see people standing outside in distinguished senators lift, I also ask them to come in because I believe that is the way it should be. How could I have slapped anybody at my age, and level. That is not possible.”

OMG: Hydrocarbon Potentials Found in Sokoto Basin

The Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has confirmed the presence of adequate  hydrocarbon in the Sokoto basin, urging governments of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states to prepare to acquire oil blocks in the basin.

Speaking at the regional technology knowledge sharing workshop on hydrocarbon potentials of the Sokoto basin, NNPC Group Managing Director, Dr. Maikanti Baru said this would make them active players in the oil and gas industry.

The workshop holding at the ultra- modern auditorium of Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, was organized by the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Government and the university.

According to Baru, the objective of exploration in the inland basins was to attract oil and gas investments upon successful discovery.

Represented by the Kaduna zonal Manager, Aliyu Jafar, the NNPC GMD solicited the support of traditional institutions and host communities for the actualization of the lofty ideals.

In their separate remarks, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his Kebbi state counterpart, Atiku Bagudu assured their support towards the actualization of oil discovery in the basin.

In his goodwill message, Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar urged the federal government to channel the revenue generated from oil exploration to the agricultural sector.

The guest speaker, Professor Muhammed Abubakar said oil exploration across the country would strengthen national unity.

The Vice Chancellor of UDUS, Professor Abdullahi Zuru, said the workshop was organized to attract attention to the Sokoto basin potentials.

Middle East: Baghdad double suicide attack kills many

At least 35 people have been killed in a double suicide bombing in the Iraqi capital Baghdad, medical sources say, the second attack in three days.

More than 90 were injured in the attack in Tayaran Square, in the city centre.
Baghdad has repeatedly been the target of bombings and armed attacks since the Islamic State (IS) group overran large areas of the country in 2014.
However, the pace of attacks has slowed since Iraq's government declared it had retaken all the territory last month.
Monday's attack was carried out by two men wearing suicide vests packed with explosives, the interior ministry said.
The site of the attack is a busy square where large crowds of construction workers gather to find work every morning.
It has been targeted by militants in the past.
An AFP reporter said there were a large number of security personnel at the site.

A suicide bomb attack on a checkpoint in the north of the city on Saturday killed at least five people, police said.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday met, behind closed doors, with the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, in the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
This information was posted on twitter account of the Presidency Nigeria; @NGRPresident on Sunday in Abuja.
The post read: “President Muhammadu Buhari meeting with Senate President and the speaker Yakubu Dogara.’’
The meeting was expected to deliberate on national issues including the recent killings reported in Benue, Taraba, Kaduna and Rivers.
President Buhari had condemned the reported killings in Benue and ordered the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act for prosecution.
The President had on January 2 expressed shock and outrage at reports of killings of innocent persons in Omoku, Rivers, and the traditional ruler of Numana, Kaduna State, Gambo Makama, and his wife.
The traditional ruler and his wife were killed in Sanga Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the New Year, while 10 villagers were reported killed at Dangaji and Ungwan Gajere villages, both in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state on Friday night by suspected gunmen.

MEETS BENUE DELEGATION MONDAY
Meanwhile, Mr. Buhari will on Monday meet with a delegation comprising political, traditional and opinion leaders from Benue State to comprehensively address the security challenges facing the state.
A source in the presidency said the urgent meeting was inevitable because of the frequency and scale of violence in the state and the reactions that have trailed the incidents.
According to the source, the presidency has been embarrassed by the large scale loss of lives caused by such repeated violence against innocent people.
The source who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not permitted to speak with the press ahead of the meeting said the discussions will address the issue of herdsmen attacks adding “ it may go beyond their menace to include the issue of the arming, training and financing of militia groups by some state governments.”
When contacted on the development, Mr. Buhari’s spokesperson, Garba Shehu, said although he was aware of the expected parley with Benue leaders, he had not been briefed about the issues being brought to the table for discussions.
He said the government welcomes any initiative by any group that would provide lasting solutions to the country’s security problems.
Mr. Shehu said security entails collective participation of all and it was, in his view “better for all to come together to find solutions instead of anyone trading blames.”

Buhari orders clampdown on perpetrators of Rivers, Kaduna killings

The presidency has ordered a clampdown on killers suspected behind attacks in Rivers and Kaduna, calling it “reprehensible and unacceptable".
Up to 20 were killed in Rivers, and gunmen also killed a traditional ruler, the Etum Numana, Dr Gambo Makama, and his pregnant wife in Sango Local Government Area of Kaduna State in the New Year.
The president, in a statement Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Garba Shehu, directed law enforcement agencies in both states to intensify their current efforts in order to speedily bring the perpetrators to face the wrath of the law.
“I have always maintained that nothing justifies the taking of the life of an innocent person. People in our communities must learn to live peacefully,” Buhari said.
He appealed to the communities affected not to embark on reprisal attacks, but allow the security agencies to carry out comprehensive investigations to properly punish the culprits.
The president commiserated with the families of the victims and wished the injured faster recovery.

Ambode made the promise in Lagos at the One Lagos Fiesta which started on Dec. 24 and ended on Jan. 1 at Eko Atlantic, Victoria Island.

“Congratulations Lagosians as I welcome you into 2018.

“We have every reason to believe that this will be a remarkable and special year for every Lagosian and for our dear state.

“Without a doubt, 2018 will be a unique year in our political trajectory. The Lagos State Government shall not relent in fulfilling it’s promises to you.

“I urge you to expect the very best this New Year, a year that holds such a great promise for all of us,” the governor said.

Ambode wished every citizen, every family and every community a remarkable and prosperous year ahead.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that over 300 music artistes and comedians participated at the talent hunt competition where three people emerged as winners.

Ambode gave cash award of N500,000, N1,000,000 and N1,500,000 to the third, second and first winners, respectively.

Unbelievable: After Buhari there is the possibility of Igbo being president – Okorocha Says

Imo state governor, Mr Rochas Okorocha has said that he does not run family government as claimed by some elite in the state and that those behind the claim really miss the point.
He also said that after President Muhammadu Buhari there is the possibility of leadership easily getting to the Igbos.

Okorocha said these, on Friday, when over five thousand members of the Rochas Mandate Movement held solidarity rally for him in Owerri.
He stated that those who never offered the people of the state leadership when they held sway but only shared the people’s resources would never come back to power in the state.
He further said that more than 4,000 children had gone to University through Rochas Foundation and more than 15,000 of such children are also in the various colleges of the Foundation and when some of them graduate, they chose to be with him and he could not afford to say no to them adding that if any of such children becomes anything under him, they would say he or she is a member of Rochas Family and he does not deny that since his ambition in life is to see people grow through him.
He said, Uche Nwosu who is from Nkwerre Local Government Area and Prince Eze Madumere, from Mbaitoli LGA are all counted today as members of his family because they have grown to prominence but when they took those steps of faith no one counted them as members of my family adding that he has done the state and her people proud with his monumental achievements.
Governor Rochas Okorocha also reiterated that he would neither run for Senate nor for the President in 2019, but would be keen in who succeeds him and who can sustain the tempo of the achievements recorded by his administration, thereby resisting the pressure from some quarters to run for Senate since he had at different fora said he won’t run for the Office of President in 2019 because of President Muhammadu Buhari.
His words, “The people I see here are people who are committed. People that are following me not because of what they could gain from me, but because of what we have done for the world. As it stands, come 2019, I’m contesting for nothing. But in my heart, I have searched out and resolved that one man has good thoughts about Nigeria in his heart. Secondly, the possibility that leadership will easily get to the Igbos after him. That man is President Muhammadu Buhari”.

He added “My coming as a leader in Imo State was by your efforts. No big political bigwig supported me and in my stride, I have brought sitting Heads of states of other countries to Imo State”.
In her speech, the Coordinator of the group and Supervisory Commissioner for the Ministry of Happiness and Purpose Fulfillment Mrs. Ogechi Ololo said the Movement will be poised to insure that someone with the passion to develop the state like the governor will govern the state in 2019, adding that Imo People will not afford to cock and bull stories with Free Education, Urban Renewal and so on.

Buhari: To Hell With Restructuring!, Buhari Blast Nwodo, Says Restructuring Nigeria Is Impossible.

In his New Year address to the nation, President Muhammadu Buhari dismissed calls for a holistic new look at Nigeria’s political structure, saying he does not see it as a priority.
“When all the aggregates of nationwide opinions are considered, my firm view is that our problems are more to do with process than structure,” the president said.
“No human law or edifice is perfect,” Mr. Buhari insisted in the State House announcement which lasted for nearly 20 minutes.
The president said Nigeria should continue to operate its current presidential system, but welcomed ideas on how to make it less permeable to extravagance, waste and corruption largely.
“There is a strong case for a closer look at the cost of government and for the public services long used to extravagance, waste and corruption to change for the better.
“I assure you that government is ever receptive to ideas which will improve governance and contribute to the country’s peace and stability,” he said in the address, which is his first to the nation since August 21, 2017.
The president urged Nigerians to be patient with the current presidential system and allow it to evolve until it becomes suitable enough to accommodate the country’s peculiarities.
The comments appeared targeted at shutting down back-end insinuations that the president may eventually yield to growing agitations for fundamental changes in Nigeria’s political structure.
Critics argue that Nigeria’s current federal system has become too centralised and its expenses have become bloated overtime.
Powers such as policing and control of natural resource, have resided almost exclusively in the federal government, a situation that has left the states largely subservient to the centre, critics say.
They favour a more decentralised structure in which state and local authorities are allowed to keep most of the resources generated within their respective boundaries, while remitting only a fraction good enough to keep the federal government running to the centre.
It is not immediately clear how the president’s party would take the latest rejection of restructuring by its leader.
The ruling party constituted a committee last year to look into calls for restructuring and prepare modalities for the parties approach to the issue.
The panel is led by Nasir El-Rufai, an APC governor and key ally of the president.
Bolaji Abdullahi, the party’s national spokesperson, and Joe Igbokwe, who speaks for the Lagos State chapter, were not immediately available for comments Monday morning.
He said the president should have avoided taking a definitive position that could be seen as undermining the supremacy of the party.
The president’s comments came a few weeks after another APC leader asked those clamouring for restructuring to forget it.
“To hell with restructuring,” said Kashim Shettima, the party’s governor in Borno State.
The APC set-up the committee following condemnation that it had abandoned one of its major campaign promises.
Its leaders had rejected the outcome of a 2014 national conference that produced hundreds of resolutions on how to address the country’s protracted political crisis.
A political analyst, Victor Okhai, said the president missed the fundamentals of restructuring in his speech.
“The president said Nigerians want to go back to the parliamentary system which they had once abandoned. This shows that he doesn’t understand the fundamentals,” Mr. Okhai said.
“He failed to mention that Nigerian did not willingly abandon the regional system in the sixties. It was the military who seized power and dismantled a working system,” he added.
Nigeria ran a regional system with a federal prime minister and federal parliament between 1960 after its independence and 1966 when the first military coup occurred.
The country would be controlled for the ensuing 13 years, during which several states were created and more powers concentrated at the centre.

The system was not reversed when a democratic president was elected in 1979 until 1983 when it was again deposed in a military coup.
The military remained in charge from then until 1999 when Nigeria returned to democracy, but the Constitution that was adopted has been criticised as a carry on of military edicts.
Mr. Okhai said advocates of restructuring are keen on giving more control to the states and a reintroduction of regional system if possible.
“This would make the states be in charge of their resources and development and no one would need to wait for a sick president at the centre to come and approve nearly everything for them,” Mr. Okhai said.
He said Mr. Buhari’s statement showed how insincere the APC has become.
“The president has always made it clear that he’s not interested in restructuring. It is the APC using propaganda to deceive the people,” Mr. Okhai said. “Let’s not forget that he had since distanced himself from the party’s campaign promises.”
“This shows that the president has a mind of his own and will go ahead with whatever he decides,” he added.
“But since Nigerians did not willingly abandon the regional system in the first place, it’s now left to the citizens to show the president that he cannot control their destiny in a democratic system. If they want restructuring, they will get it.”
The issue could play a serious role in the 2019 elections, as some of the major hopefuls, including Atiku Abubakar, have already tailored their messages towards a decentralised system.
Mr. Obin said pro-restructuring campaigners should be more vocal and lucid in their agitations if they want to have the ears of the citizens.
“When they say they want restructuring, they need to be clearer about the specifics,” he said.
